ABOUT ABOUT

Nothing dresses up a couch or lounge chair better than some attractive throw pillows. You can easily sew a plain fabric slipcover and create a nice addition to your sitting room. However, you can make an even greater look by creating easy painted quilt pillows. Quilting, after all, is one of the most popular forms of craft anywhere. It does, however, take considerable time and expertise in order to quilt a wonderful design. Instead of cutting, piecing and sewing together a quilted pillow sham, these painted quilt designs are much faster and easier.

Materials Needed

You will need various materials to complete these painted quilt pillows. You need enough sturdy muslin, twill, or other smooth cloth for the pillow cover. A piece of quilt batting the size of the pillow face is also needed. Matching thread is needed to construct the pillow. You also need various colors of acrylic fabric paint. This should be paint that can be washed and stays colorfast. The quilt design will be put on the pillow fabric with a washable sewing pen or chalk. You will also need a stuffed pillow form or fiberfill to stuff the pillowcase itself.

Painting the Pillows

The first thing you need to do before painting your pillow fabric, is decide on the quilt pattern that you wish to make. Any quilt block made of squares, rectangles and triangles will be easy to paint and stitch. After deciding on the quilt pattern, you must transfer it onto the cloth with the washable sewing pen or chalk. Once the quilt pattern is copied onto the pillow fabric, you simply have to paint in the pattern with your fabric paint. Be sure to completely cover the design with neat brush strokes. If you want to get fancy, you can make some pieces striped, dotted, or even paint small flowers or another design to mimic calico quilting fabric.
